“Xin để cho nó một năm nay nữa, tôi sẽ đào đất chung quanh và bón phân”.

Người ta sẽ rất buồn và thất vọng nếu một dự án, một công trình, một tính toán bị thất bại sau bao nhiêu công sức và thời gian được ấp ủ, đầu tư! Mỗi người chúng ta đều là công trình, dự án của Thiên Chúa và Ngài cũng đã và đang đầu tư ở đó bao nhiêu ân sủng và tình yêu của Ngài những mong mỗi chúng ta sinh hoa, kết trái!

Chúng ta được mời gọi trong Mùa Chay nhìn lại xem cuộc đời mình có đang nở rộ những chùm bông và trĩu nặng những trái mà Thiên Chúa mong chờ. Vậy bông trái mà Chúa muốn có nơi cuộc sống chúng ta là gì? Đâu là loại hoa được đơm, đâu là thứ quả được kết từ ân sủng và tình yêu mà Chúa Giêsu đã chăm nuôi chúng ta từ cuộc tử nạn và phục sinh của Ngài? Chúng ta có thể tìm thấy câu trả lời qua đoạn Lời Chúa sau: “Còn hoa quả của Thần Khí là: bác ái, hoan lạc, bình an, nhẫn nhục, nhân hậu, từ tâm, trung tín, hiền hoà, tiết độ.” (Galat 5:22-23)

“Lave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it.”

The Parable of the Fig Tree In this week’s Gospel for the 3rd Sunday of Lent, we see the eternal love of the Holy Trinity at work. Jesus tells his disciples the Parable of the Fig Tree, of how after more than 3 years of having been planted in soil, it has not bared any fruit, and the owner [God] of the tree has asked that it be cut down! But then we have the gardener [Jesus] who asks the owner for more time, one more year, so he can tend to it and provide it more minerals [Holy Spirit] so that it may be fruitful. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, how appropriate that we get this parable with Jesus coming to the Father to ask for mercy on our behalf, all of us who do not bear fruit because we are sinners!

This parable should strive to have us self-reflect on our own lives and ask, “What fruits am I bearing for the Lord?” As baptized Catholics, we are to bear and share the fruits of the Holy Spirit given to us: joy, peace, patience, modesty, self-control, goodness, generosity, chastity, charity, kindness, gentleness, and faithfulness. God quite simply will not tolerate fruitlessness indefinitely, and through Jesus, our gardener, mercy and grace are extended to us through the Spirit and the valuable element of “time” for those who do not yet bear fruit. We are called to examine our lives to see how we are utilizing our talents and time, to see what more we must do to bear fruit, in order to not be cut down.
